PUCL appeals for peace following a violent agitation
Also see, Ceasefire
could snap unity between the Nagas and Meities
PUCL expresses heartfelt grief for the unfortunate death of 14 young persons
in Manipur in course of the agitation launched on 18th June, 2001 arising
out of extension of cease-fire agreement in Manipur between the Government
of India and the NSCN(IM). PUCL while welcoming any step taken to usher
in peace in the region feels that such steps ought to be taken after taking
into confidence all concerned who will be directly affected by such process.
We urge the authorities including the Central Government to have a more
sensitive and consensus approach while dealing with the problems faced
by the North Eastern states. At the same time, PUCL salutes the spirit
of tolerance and communal harmony shown by all the communities in Manipur
who have been living together peacefully for generations and we appeal
to every one to maintain the peaceful coexistence. We also appeal to all
concerned to maintain their peaceful method of protest.
