Maharashtra PUCL:
School Teachers Get Justice
-- By R.P. Nene, 1.1.2001
In a glaring case of fraud and corruption with the collusion of the Police and
the school authorities, the school teachers were being cheated of their provident
fund amount in two fairly prominent English Medium schools in Pune. The teachers
of the school approached the PUCL branch in Pune.
It was found that their salaries were not being paid according to government
regulations; the Provident Fund amount was not being deposited in the bank for
onward transmission to the Provident Fund department. Apparently in collusion
with the police, one of the schools made false allegations against two teachers
and managed to get them arrested. The teachers concerned had raised questions
about the irregularities being practiced in the school.
The Pune PUCL took up the matter with the education department and the local
police. The teachers, through the PUCL, filed a writ petition in the High Court
of Mumbai. The Court in its judgement ordered the education department to institute
an enquiry into the affairs of the school. The education department has begun
the enquiry. The teachers are to get the arrears of their salaries for the last
several years.
The PUCL is perusing the police cases filed against the teachers.
