We are writing from SANGAMA, a queer resource centre in Bangalore.
People's Union for Civil Liberties-Karnataka, a well-known human rights
group in India has conducted an investigation (in Collaboration with
People's Democratic Forum-another human rights group, Manasa-an autonomous
feminist collective and Alternative Law Forum-a lawyers' collective) on
the human rights violations against sexuality minorities in Bangalore.
They have done this after a request from the local coalition 'Coalition
for Sexuality Minorities' Rights', Bangalore, which campaigned against
Police harassment in cruising areas in Bangalore. PUCL's report 'HUMAN
RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AGAINST SEXUALITY MINORITIES IN INDIA-A PUCL-K
FACT-FINDING REPORT ABOUT BANGALORE' is ready now.

This is one of the best reports on this issue. It looks at discrimination
by the Law (377 of the IPC, other civil laws), by the Police (extortion,
illegal detention, abuse, outing), by the Family, by the Medical
establishment (allopathy, homeopathy and popular psychology), by Popular
culture (films, books, in English, in other languages), in Public spaces,
in Work spaces, in Household spaces, its impact on the self, issues of
further marginalisation (lesbians, bisexuals, hijras, queers from
low-income groups and/or non-English backgrounds) and Conclusions and
Recommendations. It also contains a selected bibliography and a list of
groups working on queer issues.

It will be released to the press in different cities (at least 2 cities
other than Bangalore) of India tomorrow, Friday, 16th February 2000. The
report is printed in both languages i.e. ENGLISH and KANNADA. It has 76
pages of information (half A4 size pages). It is priced at Rs.25/-in
India, at $5 (USD)/ 3 Pounds (GBP).
