Nagbhushan Patnaik, the well-known CPI-ML leader who had been in jail for 11 years, was released uncondi-tionally on parole by the Supreme Court on May 6, 1981. Mr. K.G. 'Kannabiran, member, National Executive of the PUCL and Mr. V.M. Tarkunde, President, PUCL appeared for Mr. Patnaik.
The Court asked the Andhra government to consider the desirability of releasing the other five petitioners also. If the Andhra government decided not to release them, the detainee could, the Court ordered, come to it for relief again.
