Notes:

  1. Balan, 32 was released after being acquitted by the court, but was re-arrested later and killed while in police custody. He died at the General Hospital, Madras on Sept. 11, 1980. The police claim that Balan was injured while trying to escape from custody. This account was widely disputed.
  2. In addition, there are about 50 undertrial prisoners whose cases are still pending. The political prisoners in Tamil Nadu, whether convicted or undertrial were frequently transferred from jail to jail. 17 prisoners were killed in "encounters" last year: 6 Aug 1980 to 24 Aug. 1981, according to official sources.
