Human Rights Award to Tarkunde

Vithal Mahadev Tarkunde was presented the M. A. Thomas National Human Rights Award for the year 2000 on August 11 at Bangalore in a solemn and largely attended function. Justice Tarkunde was presented this Award "during the 25th anniversary of the Emergency for the courage, secular outlook, and concern for the under privileged" that he has shown and upheld. The Vigil India Movement, founded by Rev. Dr. M. A. Thomas, has distinguished itself by conferring the Award on Shri Tarkunde.

V M Tarkunde was born on July 3, 1909. He is the recipient of numerous National and International Award. His is outstanding work is institutionalised in the form of the radical humanist movement, which he nurtured and carried forward after the death of M N Roy, the citizens for democracy, and People's Union for civil Liberties. He was decorated with Padmabhushan in 1998.

The People's Union for Civil Liberties is proud of its founding presidents continued efforts in safeguarding and upholding Civil Liberties and Human Rights.
