Ajit Kumar Sharma is no more
According to late message received from Shri Dev Kant Kakati, working President of Assam PUCL expired on June 12, 2000.
Shri Sharma was an Ex. Member of Parliament and was highly respected for his fearless views and commitment to Human Rights. He was the general Secretary of the Assam branch of the PUCL and a member of the National Council for more than 12 years. His death is an irreparable loss to the PUCL.
Usha Mehta Dies
Dr. Usha Mehta an outstanding Gandhian and a committed worker in the field of Civil Liberties and Human Rights passed away in Mumbai on August 11, 2000 at the age of 80. On 9th August she had participated in the Quit India Movement Anniversary at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.
Dr. Usha Mehta was one of the founding members of the PUCL and was for a long time a member of the National Council and a Vice President of the National PUCL and the Bombay PUCL.
She held various positions in Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahaalaya, Asian Book Trust, Freedom Fighters organisations, Bombay University, University Grants Commission, Gandhi Peace Foundation, Sarvodaya Mandal, Nirmala Niketan, Bombay, Yusuf Mehrally Centre, Mumbai, Asiatic Society, Indian Institute of Advance Studies, Shimla and in many more. She was the author of more than two hundred books and articles in English, Gujarati, and Hindi.
She won various awards as a teacher, a freedom fighter, as an eminent citizen, a Gandhian, and as a social worker.
She was decorated with Padmavibhushan in 1998.
She would be long remembered for her role in the national movement and during the Emergency. She used to run an underground radio during the Quit India Struggle. She was sentenced to 4 years rigorous imprisonment in Yervada Jail in 1942.
