Children's Code Bill
Mr. Justice CR Krishna Iyer presented the Children's Code Bill, 2000 to the Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee at a high level meeting attended by Union Ministers and Child Rights experts on November 14.
The day was observed as
the millennium's first children's day. The Bill was presented by Justice Iyer
as the Chairperson of the National Expert Group on Child Rights. The other members
of the group are Justice A M Ahmedi, Former Chief Justice of India; Prof G C
Raghavan; Ms. Margaret Alva; Shri Ramiah, Swami Agnivesh, Dr. Richard Young, and Ms. Padma Seth, Convenor of the group.
Mr. Justice Krishna Iyer prescribes the Code as most timely and a positive step. Alan Court country representative of UNICEF expressed the hoped that India would provide new leadership in reserving child rights. Earlier Ms Padma Seth explained the genesis of the court.
The Prime Minister assured that it would be examined and adopted into the Indian setting. He said that he hoped the Code would offer new solutions to old problems.
