Himachal Pradesh PUCL branch formed

Rajindar Sachar, former President, People’s Union for Civil liberties and at present National Executive Member inaugurated the Himachal Pradesh branch of the PUCL on September 6. He said in his inaugural speech that the PUCL had moved the Supreme Court in the clean election case, for directing the intending candidates to file their list of assets and criminal cases, if any, at the time of filing nomination. PUCL had also challenged the illegal actions of telephone tapping by the government. It also filed petition in the Supreme Court, against fake encounters in the North East & Punjab, in which the Supreme Court issued directions to hold inquiries and award compensations. The PUCL has challenged POTA in the Supreme Court in which case the judgement is reserved. PUCL was the first one to fight the battle for Bombay hawkers.

It has also taken up the case of slums in Delhi, Bombay, and Rajasthan. PUCL has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court on right of food, and famine deaths in which the Court has issued various orders for midday meals and directing rations to be supplied to those below the poverty line. Presently the PUCL had moved Rajasthan High Court in the case of a young boy, Muneer of Pakistan, who was in police custody for many months. The High court ordered his release and directed the Central Government to send the boy to Pakistan.

Rajindar Sachar announced the formation of an ad hoc committee of the following members, which will function as state branch. They would hold a regular session in 2004.
