Slaughter at Nandigram

PUCL press statement

-- By K G Kannabiran, President Y P Chhibbar, General Secretary (Justice)Rajindar Sachar(Retd) Former President, PUCL Pushkar Raj, Secretary.

The PUCL is horrified at the turn of events at Nandigram in West Bengal on March 14, which resulted in the death of eleven persons, as reported in the press. It is reported that a possé of about 5000 police persons was deployed to, what the DGP of West Bengal says, “restore the rule of law. The situation has irked even the Governor of West Bengal who has expressed “a sense of cold horror”.

It is equally condemnable that there is an attempt on the part of administration to gag the news coming out of the Nandigram by preventing the media from going to the site of police violence and subjecting the journalists to intimidation and manhandling.

The PUCL strongly condemns the strong armed action by the police and demands an enquiry into the incident by a retired judge of the High Court and the resignation of the State Home Minister.

PUCL also demands that a comprehensive policy guideline be framed on SEZ with the consultation with farmers, social activists and political parties and till that time all land acquisition moves should be kept on hold.
