'Journalism for Human Rights' award & JP Memorial Lecture
General Secretary's introduction
-- By Y.P. Chhibbar
The PUCL 'Journalism
for Human Rights' Award and JP Memorial function was held at Pune
on March 23, 2003. Justice P.B. Sawant delivered the 23rd J P Memorial
Lecture on Human Rights in Retreat. Dr. S.P. Sathe presided over the function
and presented the 22nd PUCL 'Journalism for Human Rights' Award to Dionne
Bunsha and the Special Mention to P.K. Prakash (who could not be present
due to ill health) and his award was received by Abdul Rasheed, his colleague.
The time of the function clashed with the World Cup cricket final in South
Africa in which India was playing. While every one was glued to the TV
and the streets and roads all over the country were deserted. About 100
people attended the function. Shri K.G. Kannabiran introduced Shri S.P.
Sathe and Justice Sawant. (Introduction of Shri Sathe and Justice Sawant
and the Award Citation and the Special Mention Citation of the two winners
are published elsewhere).
At the end of the function the General Secretary thanked Justice Sawant
and Shri S.P. Sathe for devoting the invaluable time to the function.
He thanked all the donors (see list elsewhere), including Mumbai PUCL
and especially S.A.A. Pinto, M.A. Rane, and Yogesh Kamdar for raising
funds for this function. He also thanked his colleague in the national
office at Delhi. He expressed gratitude to the Pune PUCL, especially Taher
Poonawala and R.P. Nene for organising the function.
