Andhra Pradesh police have arrested six civil liberties activists including
Mr Hariprasad, president of the Chittoor district committee of Andhra
Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC), linking them with the attack
on chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on October 1, 2003.
Despite knowing that civil liberties organisations do not support this
type of activities, the police have arrested them and whisked them away
to unknown destination without producing them in court.
APDR expresses deep concern about the safety of their lives.
APDR strongly condemns this criminal attempt by the police to throttle
the civil liberties movement. In Andhra Pradesh, the police are saying
that APCLC is a "mouthpiece of People's War". In West Bengal
they are branding the APDR in a similar fashion.
The civil liberties movement is the mouthpiece of the civil society and
of nobody else. It cannot be silenced in this manner.
APDR demands unconditional release of Hariprasad and all arrested civil
liberties activists and expresses solidarity with their movement.
