Obituary: Pramila Dandavate

Pramila Dandavate, one of the founding members of the PUCL, died at mid-night, December 31, 2001/January 1, 2002 of a massive heart attack. Pramila ji was one of the founders of the Mahila Dakshata Samiti. She was jailed during the emergency for 18 months. After the death of Ms. Usha Mehta of Bombay her death is the second blow to the women's movement. When she moved to Delhi, alongwith her husband, Shri Madhu Dandavate, she remained active alongwith Ms. Suman Krishan Kant and Ms. Manju Mohan and established the MDS in Delhi also.

She was a member of the PUCL National Council and the National Executive Committee for a number of years. A fearless, dynamic, and vocal activist of the rights of women, she leaves behind a void in the human rights movement in the country. - Y.P. Chhibbar, General Secretary
