-- By Prabhakar Sinha
Sister Sudha Vergese, a member of the National Council and a former Vice President of Bihar PUCL has been awarded a Padmashree this year. She has been living and working at a village named Jamsaur in Patna district.
The village is inhabited by Mushahars, a very neglected Dalit community. Her stay for 20 years among them has made a great difference to their life. Sister Sudha has been fighting against their oppression and exploitation. Her fight included not only appearing for them in a court of law (as a lawyer), but also confronting the local goons involved in their oppression. On one occasion, she was also injured in a lathi charge by the police.
