PUCL, August 2004

Remarks by senior university official in Gujarat are inappropriate

The following Press statement has been issued today

PEOPLE'S UNION FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES
13 Pratapkunj, Karelibaug, Vadodara 390 018. Ph: 0265 2464210

14.08.2004.

PUCI Baroda takes strong exception to the remark of a senior M.S.University Professor and Chief warden Dr. Anil Navale that there is Naxalite activity in the hostel and that students staying in hostel are indulging in illicit drug and liquor trade. The statement mentioning the state Jharkhand, North East and Rajasthan from where the students are coming is highly discriminating.

Such comments will increase the feeling of parochialism and regionalism among students and in University, which will do much damage to national integrity and unity. The generalized statement which is nothing but white lie effects the image of the students of these areas of country.

This is to be condemned as insolent of a great University.

Yours truly,
Kirit Bhatt.
President
Baroda Chapter PUCL.
